The why

7 out of 10 young people in Germany feel left alone when it comes to early career choices.

— ‘Generation What’ study (2017)

Reflecting on my own school experience, I often felt unprepared for life after graduation. This motivated me to work with Mein Mutiger Weg, a German startup focused on career orientation for students.

They were already offering in-person workshops in schools. I joined their team to co-create Traumjob Campus, a new digital platform to extend their impact.

Why the 'Traumjob Campus' is needed

What the Traumjob Campus offers

The platform provides 13 self-paced learning modules.

Each module consists of a series of:

🎥 Video-based learning
📄 Interactive worksheets and materials
🧑‍🏫 Live coachings

Students explore personal interests, learn to set goals, and gain insight into real-world career paths.

The online campus offers live group session of career advice.

In this section, students get access to the weekly live coaching sessions as well as a library with recordings of previous sessions and related resources.

Students can find mentors to talk about the career path they are interested in.

‘Mentor matching’ is a database of specialists offering their mentoring skills. This allows young people to search for professionals or students who have a current career path that interests them.

Research

Research questions

1
What must digital learning platforms offer to effectively support students aged 16–19?

2
How can digital career guidance be designed to truly engage young people?

Methods used:

  • Remote interviews with 15 secondary school students
  • Desk research on existing educational tools
  • Stakeholder interviews (teachers, coaches)

‘The time after school is a great uncertainty that everyone of us tries to suppress.’

— Philomena, student of 12th grade (2020)

Interviews

Interviews with secondary school students about:

  • their future planning and wishes
  • their ideas for a more valuable future guidance integrated into school education
  • their usage of digital learning tools
  • their current learning success in digital environments.

Insight mapping: Career and study orientation

Students' needs in career guidance:

  • Students wanted earlier and more practical experience (e.g. internships)

  • More peer exchange and real-world input from professionals

  • Better integration of guidance into everyday school systems (like Moodle)

Insight mapping: Digital tools in learning processes

Students' preferences in digital learning:

  • Demand for more multimedia formats (videos, graphics, etc.)

  • Students often more tech-savvy than their teachers

  • Desire for personalized, flexible tools

  • Existing hardware was underutilized in schools

Defining design principles

Success criteria for the learning platform

I synthesized research findings into a design checklist to inform the product direction. This included:

  • Self-paced learning structure
  • Visual and interactive content
  • Personalisation features
  • Seamless integration of coaching and mentoring

Designing the Traumjob Campus

Corporate Identity & Visual Design

I developed a cohesive visual language for the digital campus, drawing from existing brand assets:

  • A custom color scheme and UI elements
  • Icon and illustration styles
  • Tone and feel that resonates with a teenage audience

Information architecture

I created a complete content map to help the team structure and prioritize features across the platform.

From sketches to digital wireframes

Starting with low-fidelity sketches, I designed and iterated wireframes using Figma, including:

  • Navigation structure
  • Module layouts
  • Mentor database
  • Worksheet interfaces

The inclusion of a network was an important part of the new campus to give the digital space a human touch.

Impact and success of the Traumjob Campus

450 students were actively using the Traumjob Campus within the first year after launch.

(Product launch 2021)

In the first year after launch,  450+ students engaged with the self-paced modules after in-person seminars in their school. Student users either worked independently or in classroom settings.

The addition of customized live coaching sessions led to a noticeable increase in student engagement, allowing more young people to receive individualized career guidance and support.

Up until today, the traumjob campus utilised by more than 4000 students in Germany.

Accessibility iteration of the Traumjob Campus in 2022

Due to the growing number of new students joining the online campus, I led design improvements including:

  • Redesigned navigation for better orientation
  • Video tagging & categorization for faster search
  • Refined worksheet UX
  • Updated visuals for a more modern and engaging feel

Funding gained at Hackathon
by ‘Digital engagiert’ – an initiative by Amazon, AWS, and Stifterverband.

We have participated in the 'Future of Education' hackathon organised by N3XTCODER.

  • I facilitated a remote design sprint with the product team and external participants
  • We developed gamification concepts and new user flows
  • Secured 2nd place and gained funding for future development
